Ward boundary changes may impact communities BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD

Helen Broughton

City council plans to review ward boundaries may have a huge impact for residents in the Western News area. The representation review will determine how communities will be represented by community boards and the city council, along with a review of the ward boundaries. Changes will be decided for the 2016 local body elections. Riccarton-Wigram Community

Board deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton said the review would be very interesting. She said the population of each ward could only be 10 per cent above or below other wards and the Riccarton-Wigram ward has had a 25 per cent increase in population since the last review. “We do have to lose a sizeable chunk of our ward.” Mrs Broughton said areas of interest would be Halswell and Westmorland because they had question

About 30 students taking the summer school course CHCH101: Rebuilding Christchurch spent five days finding out how local groups defined their communities. •From page 1 The students, from Peking University, Adelaide University, Universitats Padjadjaran in Indonesia and Canterbury University talked to a wide range of residents from groups that did not usually take part in council consultations. They then presented their findings to a joint council and university briefing. They reported on how ethnic minorities, migrants, the elderly, disabled and young people define their communities. Their reports threw up a wide range of issues affecting residents and offered a number of suggestions for how to better connect with the groups they engaged with. The representation review looks at whether residents have fair and effective representation at council and is carried out every six years. Comments from the residents will help inform possible new ward boundaries. Later this year, the city council will ask the public to comment formally on its proposed new ward boundaries, elected member numbers and community boards and membership.

Key opens big Hornby distribution centre Prime Minster John Key visited Hornby last week to open Foodstuffs South Island’s new distribution centre. Mr Key was given a tour of the new complex and tried his hand at operating a forklift. The new centre connects to the existing ambient warehouse. Supply chain general manager John Mullins said it will be servicing 300 New World, Pak ’N Save, Four Square and On the Spot stores throughout the South Island. “From as far afield as Collingwood and Stewart Island the distribution network sees 200 trucks leave the distribution centre every day and travel a massive six million kilometres around the country each year.” He said across the new ambient section of the site, 400 staff will distribute more than 450,000 cartons of product out to supermarkets every day. “The temperature-controlled warehouse adds another 210,000 cartons each week, with the total number of cartons distributed rising to as many as one million at busy times such as Christmas and Easter. No easy feat by any means.”

Facilities make progress

Work on the Halswell Pool and Community Facilities site is progressing well with the foundations and ground floor slab almost complete. The first fix steel is currently being installed. The project is on programme for completion and fit out December. The outdoor pool has remained open and has been heavily used by the public over the recent months. Repair work on the Sockburn Recreation Centre is currently out for tender. Community Facilities Rebuild unit manager Darren Moses said the repair work is scheduled to begin in early March with the demolition of the pool changing rooms. Strengthening and earthquake repairs will follow. Work is planned to be complete by September. A programme for the work will be clear by late February.

Aviation, broadcasting big part Christchurch man Peter Clements has a colourful history in aviation and broadcasting, and has just released his fourth novel. Reporter Bridget Rutherford chats to him about his new book, his different professions and what it was like to be a pilot. So Peter, can you tell me a bit about yourself? Well I was born in the United Kingdom in Devon, and I have lived in the UK, Canada, Germany and the Middle East. I spent three years in the Middle East, I was part of the British Intelligence and that’s all I can say about that. I spent my first five years in Canada as a child and then went back to Canada in 1963 and trained to be a pilot. We moved to New Zealand and lived in Auckland for a year in 1966 before moving down to Christchurch where I was with Mount Cook Airlines for almost 30 years. While I was at Mount Cook flying I worked in television and radio. I was a presenter for South Pacific Television. Then

ILAM

I went and presented a couple of other things. I was part of the National Film Unit of history and then became a video producer of flight safety videos. I did all of this while I was still flying. What was the most interesting thing about being a pilot? I was going up and down the country and up and down the alps. It’s a very different job to most airlines, I started the position 18 months after it started. You fly a fairly large aircraft and it’s a combination of airline and mountain flying. It’s very challenging. What brought you to Christchurch? Simply because the job at Mt Cook was based here. I’ve grown to love it. What made it all the more enjoyable was that my wife Valerie loved it. She loves the climate. We have two children and seven grandchildren. Half of them have moved offshore to Brisbane so we have family scattered across the Tasman. What was your favourite country to live in? I’ve always had a fondness for Canada, I don’t know why. Had things not worked out here we would have gone back very

quickly. Since I retired, my wife and I did a lot of travelling. We’ve been to Bangladesh, Bermuda, Eastern Europe and Haiti - that was an experience. So you have just released a new book, A Murder at Bletchley Park, what is it about? Well it is sort of ‘how do you solve a murder where no one can tell you what they do?’ Chief Wren Sally Evans is found murdered one morning in Bletchley Park. It is based in 1941 so it is a pivotal point of the war. By the end of 1941, that was the point when everything turned against Germany and Japan, it was the beginning

of the end for them. The British were able to break the Germans’ code, enigma. My book has come out at a fortunate time because the film The Imitation Game which is about breaking the code came out. Not only has the film come out, but also The Bletchley Circle television series is in its second season. The British Government has also spent millions of pounds doing up Bletchley Park and it’s become quite the tourist attraction. I had no idea they were coming out but it all makes the book more topical. So when was it released? It was released about three weeks ago in New York City, New

of author’s life They require quite a lot of research, that’s the part I like most. Two of them are readily available at the Christchurch Library. The first and second are both based in the Middle East and my third is about the history of modern Israel set from 1948 to the future. All of my novels are based in different eras and countries. My next book is going to be based in Northern Africa. It takes about two years to write a book so I can’t tell you what it’s called or what the plot is. People always ask ‘how do you go about writing it?’ I have a rough idea but the novel takes over. It’s a strange phenomena and I have no idea where it’s going. I’ve tried planning the chapters, but it doesn’t work out that way. Do you have a special place or time where you like to write? I don’t give it the priority that I should between the garden and other things. I have an office downstairs where I write and I get down to it after lunch. I’m going to be much more diligent with my writing, that is my New Year’s resolution. What are some of your hobbies? I enjoy reading and writing. Keeping up with my family although some of them live in Australia, and working on the house and garden. I did have Dove Film Productions Ltd that closed recently which took up a lot of my time. We made flight safety videos and were contracted by the Civil Aviation Authority to turn these out. We made about two or three

a year and made more than 40 of these. They were shown in aero clubs and flying schools. They were made on a shoestring and everyone had an interest in flight safety. I wrote the scripts and was the producer, director and presenter. It took about a week to make the film but about two weeks to write the script. How did you get into broadcasting? I worked in British broadcasting, but there was only the BBC in the UK. So I went to Canada to go into broadcasting but went into aviation instead. When I came down to New Zealand, I worked for television and got a job in Freetime, then the National Film Unit, TVNZ and then radio. My time in TV was mainly doing Freetime and I fronted a couple of agricultural shows. Why did you go into aviation? Most people who go into aviation have always wanted to do it, but I didn’t. I was brought up on an airfield, we were living in Germany at the time and I had spitfires outside my bedroom window but it didn’t interest me at all. Broadcasting alluded me. Have you completed any study? I have an honours degree in political science from Canterbury University. After that, in 1997, I went back to Canada to the Lester B Pearson Canadian International Peace Keeping Training Centre. It was a postgraduate course for six intense weeks. We spent five days in New York at the peace keeping centre and then went to Haiti.

That was fascinating, it was my retirement present. Prior to 1994, all commercial pilots had to retire at 55 but the Human Rights Act changed it. It changed just before I was due to retire from flying so I didn’t have to but by then I was attending university and I had already done about 185,000 hours flying and that was quite enough. Do you still fly from time to time? I haven’t touched it. I’m 75, no I think enough is enough. But in 2008 I got a call from Airways Corporation asking would I like to join them as an instructor of air traffic controlling in Christchurch. I was 68 and it was a totally new profession. But then the earthquake came and we lost all of our international students and I was made redundant. What else have you been involved in? I was also deeply involved in the New Zealand Airline Pilots’ Association where I was a general aviation liaison officer. I travelled all over New Zealand from the cape to the bluff talking about the benefits of joining. I was a volunteer for eight years. I also took part in a couple of feature films like Moriori and one about James Mackenzie, the sheep rustler. For the first one we went out in a small boat for filming and had to wear big old fashioned clothing, like they would have worn in those days. If the darn thing tipped over then we wouldn’t be able to swim. They were interesting, I’d never worked on a film before.

New netball club formed BY KYLE KNOWLES

When the Saints go marching in. That will be the cry from the supporters of Hearts Saint Peters Netball Club after Hearts and St Peters have officially amalgamated and are to be known simply as the Saints. President of the club Sarah Heath said it was a positive for both clubs and bodes well for success both on and off the court. “It’s just amazing. A lot of the girls at St Peters and Hearts didn’t want to see the clubs go, so going forward we are able to promote it as a coming out of tough times and build this new club on the basis of the old clubs.”

Both clubs found themselves in the position of falling players, due to seniors moving away and high schools in the area playing the same league on a Saturday. Heath said joining the two worked well in terms of the make-up of teams, both clubs brought to the new one. She said Hearts had stronger senior and premier teams while St Peters had a good junior base and with the two joined it would create a great pathway for young netballers to play top level netball in Christchurch. Both clubs were facing the same challenges and decided to join players and resources

to ensure the 50-year history of both clubs survived. Heath said the new name was something that had to be in touch with the to original clubs and Saints would be a fitting name. The club will play in a predominantly navy strip with a pink logo. Trial dates for club premier and senior one and two grades are February 28 and March 1 from 9.30am to noon at the Hagley Park netball courts. Registrations will be held beforehand at 9am. Second grade trials are on March 7 and 8 at Hagley Park, between 2-4pm with registrations at 1.30pm.

The finals will be held in The Aurora Centre on March 7 at 7.30pm with a first prize of $7000. Mr Wood has chosen to play Piano Concerto No.1, in F –sharp minor, by Sergei Rachmaninoff. At this time he began having lessons with former pianist Maurice Till, becoming his last and only student. Mr Wood is now a University of Auckland honours student, studying alongside head of piano and senior lecturer Rae de Lisle. He completed both his Trinity Associate and Licentiate diplomas with distinction within a year and developed a deeper understanding of what it is to be a musician. He performed the first movement of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1 with the Nelson

Symphony Orchestra in 2013. Last year Mr Wood was announced as the Auckland Philharmonia’s piano scholar for 2014. This resulted in him experiencing three performances of the first movement of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No.1 with the APO. He also performed the whole of the Prokofiev with the Canterbury Philharmonia. Last year his group, the Golden Quintet, performed in Auckland, Kerikeri and Hamilton. He was one of only 16 pianists worldwide to be selected to compete in the Kerikeri International Piano Competition. In 2013 he was awarded Auckland University’s Janetta McStay Prize for pianists and was a semi-

Action to stop car hoons BY GRACE CABELL

Calls from residents angered by hoons congregating in Plynlimon Rd may have put a stop to it all. The road in Fendalton has been causing problems for residents in the area with noisy, late night gatherings. And with no parking restrictions it was a perfect spot for car enthusiasts to park up late at night. But following a decision made in the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board’s February 2 meeting a recommendation

He said parking prohibitions were not uncommon but restrictions were not usually applied to residential areas. “Any restriction to prohibit loitering would have the unintended consequence of removing parking from residents during the evening, reducing access to the park, and discriminating against people who have reason to be there.” He said the issue is not something that should be addressed with the use of parking restrictions.

Mischievous cheetah cubs are now on display at Orana Wildlife Park, ready to delight visitors with their confident and playful demeanour. The four cubs, named Matata, Kanzie, Gorse and Nia (three boys and one girl) were raised by Orana Park staff members after they were abandoned by their mother at just a few hours old. Animal keeper Sam Jeune, one of three keepers who raised the cubs, said they are very confident and mischievous. “They have so much curiosity and being typical youngsters play with everything and constantly explore their surroundings. It is great that we can now allow visitors the chance to see and learn about these beautiful animals.” The cubs will be on display for scheduled periods during the day, subject to KITTY-CAT: Nia the cheetah cub is now on display, along with three weather conditions. others, at Orana Wildlife Park.

He said it would only shift the problem elsewhere. “Trying to prohibit young drivers from congregating in this location will just move them on to another street where we will have the same issues in a different location, and this process would likely keep repeating it-

Future solution to obesity

‘Imaginary meal’ pill could help to tackle the crisis. Steve Connor finds out more

A PILL that makes you feel as if you have just eaten a meal has prevented weight gain, lowered cholesterol and controlled levels of sugar in the blood - at least in laboratory mice. The inventors of the drug said that unlike similar dietary pills, it is designed to stay within the intestines and not to circulate in the bloodstream, making it inherently safer with fewer side-effects than other pharmaceuticals aimed at preventing obesity. Clinical trials on humans are planned, the scientists said. It will become the latest in a number of prototype drugs aimed at combating the obesity crisis through appetite suppression, feelings of satiety or other ways of controlling calorie intake. “This pill is like an imaginary meal. It sends out the same signals that normally happen when you eat a lot of food, so that the body starts clearing out space to store it. But there are no calories and no change in appetite,” said Ronald Evans, of the Salk Institute, California.

COMBAT FAT: The new drug is said to have fewer sideeffects than existing treatments. The drug, called fexaramine, targets a protein on the surface of the cells in the digestive system called the farensoid X receptor (FXR), which triggers the release of bile acids from the liver in preparation for the digestion of food, as well as being involved in the storage of fats and sugars. Normally, the FXR receptor is turned on at the beginning of a meal in anticipation of food and calories. It also induces changes to blood sugar levels and causes the body to burn some fats before a meal, Mr Evans said. Other drugs can also turn on the FXR receptor in the intestines but they also work in the liver, kidneys and adrenal glands. However, the fexaramine pill developed by the Salk researchers stays within the intestine and targets only the cells

of the gut, they said. “When you eat, you have to quickly activate a series of responses all throughout the body and the reality is that the very first responder for all this is the intestine,” Mr Evans said. When the scientists fed the drug to obese mice for five weeks they stopped putting on weight, lost fat and had lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels compared with untreated mice. The study, published in Nature Medicine, also found that the mice had raised body temperatures, which indicates that their metabolism had increased, and some of their white fat deposits – associated with ill health – were converted to less-damaging brown fat. A crucial observation was that the fexaramine, when given orally,

stays within the intestines and as a result appears to work better than other drugs aimed at stimulating the FXR receptor that enters the bloodstream, Mr Evans said. This means the drug follows the “natural order” of how the FXR is normally turned on, by activating the cells of the gut before other parts of the digestive system, he said. “The body’s response to a meal is like a relay race, and if you tell all the runners to go at the same time, you’ll never pass on the baton. We’ve learned how to trigger the first runner so that the rest of the events happen in a natural order,” Mr Evans said. Nick Finer, of University College London, who was not involved in the research, said: “These findings are potentially of great importance

to our basic understanding of how energy intake is balanced by energy expenditure and, potentially, as to why this system is mismatched in those who gain – or lose – excessive weight.” Other scientists are working on alternative anti-obesity drugs. Harvard University researchers are working on ways of converting harmful white fat, which is linked with diabetes and heart disease, to brown fat, which can be used to burn off excess energy intake. The prototype drugs work by triggering the conversion of fat stem cells, which would normally develop into white fat tissue, into brownlike fat. Scientists at Imperial College London have identified an enzyme that drives the craving for sugar in the brain’s hypothalamus, which regulates food intake. The enzyme, called glucokinase, could be a viable target for an anti-obesity drug, they said. Another team of researchers at Imperial College have worked out how to produce palatable versions of propionate, a fatty acid with a bitter taste that can suppress appetite. They attach propionate to inulin, a starchy fibre found in chicory, so that it can be delivered undigested to the gut where it releases appetite-suppressing hormones. – Independent

The simple answer to health issues It sounds hard to believe but there could be a simple answer to reduce stress, relieve pain, increase your energy, improve your sleep patterns, help with dyslexia and

give up smoking all at the same time.

A

visit to Acupuncture Without Needles with Dr Lan Xiao provides that simple answer. By stimulating particular points on the body, an instant release of energy helps to heal itself. ”Our bodies can become weak and acupuncture makes them stronger and restores their energy levels,” says Dr Lan. During treatment, vital points on the body are stimulated. “The results are very quick and effective. Older people find that it gives them more

movement, makes them feel younger and stops the body from working so hard.” Dr Lan’s clients speak very highly of how she has helped them with a range of issues. “I have shin pain in both legs that are so sensitive that I’ll not let anyone touch them. This has been with me for 25 years. After one treatment, I have been relieved of this excruciating pain and fear,” says Jo. “As a chronic insomniac all my life, suffering daily and often times have debilitating headaches, I am over the moon to state that after my second session, I

am enjoying six hours of unbroken sleep and upon waking feel very refreshed. My headache has not returned since the first session,” says Donna-Marie. “Before Dr Lan’s treatment, I had difficulty reading and understanding words due to being dyslexic. We tested my reading ability and words appeared broken. After the treatment, I was instantly able to read the same word clearly. This has made a huge improvement to my life,” says Sarah. Dr Lan has recently written a book Dr Lan’s Reflexology Network, titled which she describes as the “revolutionary discovery” that the entire body has points for reflexology, not just the nose, hand, ear or foot. Copies of the book can be bought by contacting Dr Lan directly.

Dr Lan’s new book about the body’s network of reflexology points.

A day to celebrate children The Streets Children’s Day will make its return next month at the Airforce Museum in Wigram. The first Sunday in March is internationally recognised as Children’s Day, and the event will return on March 1 to celebrate that. It will also remind adults to do something special for the small people in their lives and provide an opportunity for families to take

part in the events with one another. The free events will include bouncy entertainment, a climbing tower, sports and obstacle courses, pony rides, face painting, a maze, story time and more. A performance stage will entertain the pre-school and primary school aged children and the Teddy Bear’s picnic will take place on another stage.

The event is part of the Garden City SummerTimes festival and will be smokefree and dog-free. It will be cancelled in the event of heavy rain. The Streets Children’s Day will be held from 10am to 3pm at the Air Force Museum in Wigram with free entry. For more information, visit www.summertimes. co.nz.

Miracle weight loss fruit

A

n extract of a small pumpkin-like fruit called garcinia cambogia from India and Asia has shown to greatly assist weight management and overall health. Many have found it to increase fat loss by two to three times greater than normal. The Dr Oz Show on television has said it is the most effective and fastest working natural supplement to support weight loss. Even without exercise and diet changes, many have found it beneficial, although better and quicker results are often obtained with extra exercise and an improved diet. The extract of this amazing fruit is called hydroxycitric acid (HCA) or CitriMax. Research has shown HCA help suppress the appetite, reduce cravings, feel fuller for longer, increase energy levels, help prevent

R

Fire ban there for a reason

BY MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

Last week I complained about people setting off fireworks as a rather stupid way of entertaining themselves. Well, it still hasn’t stopped in spite of the damage caused in last week’s event. This time was last Thursday in Bromley. It isn’t rocket science. It’s not fun-police stuff or over officious bureaucracy. Christchurch is dry. There is a fire ban for a very good reason. Any idiot that uses what is effectively a flame-thrower does so in a totally irresponsible way. There will be some public displays by professionals in the next few weeks. Watch those. An elderly lady in Condell Ave in Papanui found her dishwasher smoking last Thursday morning and quite correctly called our troops from Harewood.

The easy part was disconnecting the power. It’s probably all they really needed to do. But for peace of mind for the homeowner the fire crew carefully disconnected the dishwasher from power and water and carried it outside. That’s the sort of little service we expect our teams to provide – but it doesn’t stop us feeling just a wee bit of pride when we notice it. Only one kitchen fire this week, in a flat in Strickland St where the elderly occupant had locked herself out with a pot still on the stove. Two fire trucks attended and managed quickly to gain entry. Any disaster was averted. Just by calling the fire service early on. It seems so elementary but too many people struggle in vain for fear of bothering us. Don’t.

fat from being made and stored, increase lean muscle mass, increase serotonin levels, improve cholesterol levels, help prevent sugar spikes as well as other health benefits. It is considered a very safe supplement (although check first if you are on medication) as it has been used for centuries as a flavouring agent and digestive aid. To obtain reliable results, it is important to take a product that contains a standardised extract of 60 per cent HCA and also take the recommended amount as used in the clinical research. Some supplements also contain ChromeMate, a well-researched form of niacin-bound chromium to help improve the results even more. Contact Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy, phone 388 5757.

Co-Q10 has proven results

esearchers were amazed with the results of how beneficial a natural nutrient Coenzyme Q10 (Co-Q10) is to the human body. Co-Q10 is a natural enzyme in the body’s cells that is essential for cell function, energy and survival. The heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas require large amounts of Co-Q10 to function well. In a recent multi-country double blind trial on the possible benefits of Co-Q10 to protect against heart failure, 420 patients with severe heart failure were given Co-Q10 or a placebo and then followed for two years. It was found to the amazement of the researchers the patients who received the Co-Q10 had a 50 per cent reduction in an adverse cardiovascular event or death compared to the placebo patients. Not only this, but the patients on the Co-Q10 had a 50 per cent reduction in death not only from cardiovascular events but from all causes. According to lead study author professor

Mortensen, this study is the first in over a decade to show that a natural nutrient can reduce heart failure mortality and Co-Q10 should be added as a standard treatment for anyone with cardiovascular complaints. It is known that Co-Q10 levels decrease in the heart muscle of patients with heart failure as severity worsens. Statin drugs are used to treat many patients with cardiovascular problems but these drugs also reduce Co-Q10 levels further in the body. Symptoms of low Co-Q10 in the body can be low energy and endurance, muscle pain, poor memory, concentration and poor heart function or heart failure. Co-Q10 levels are known to decrease as we age and many researchers believe keeping our levels up of this vital nutrient may help prevent many chronic diseases including cancer. Co-Q10 is available as a natural supplement to support good health. Visit Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy at 110 Seaview Road, or phone 03 388 5757.

Aranui High offers a vibrant and inclusive co-educational environment in which students flourish and gain success in academic achievement, and sporting and cultural pursuits. With only two years to the Aranui campus development, the school is moving forward rapidly to provide the 21st century digital learning environment necessary to meet the learning needs of young people. Aranui has state-of-the-art facilities in technology and the performing arts. After an outstanding year in 2014, music and theatre are set to continue on this successful pathway. Artistic energy By Larissa McMillan

W

hen a friend recommended Jonathan Milne’s book Go! The Art of Change to Anne Bannock, she then looked into studying at The Learning Connexion – the school of art and creativity, based in Wellington which Jonathan founded and directs. She realised that its study-fromhome, part-time option suited her down to a tee. “My lifelong ambition was to go to an art school and to be part of the creative energy that goes with it,” says Anne. “To enter a new world of understanding modern art and new ideas.” Situated in picturesque Ngatimoti, Anne has made a studio retreat that caters to her creativity and to the public. “My studio is a converted cowshed which serves as my studio and gallery, and is open to the public Anne Bannock in the summer.” The Advanced Diploma programme has been the best programme of study for Anne to follow, allowing her to discover new techniques and skills to add to her extensive creative repertoire. “Everyone I have met has been helpful, especially the tutors. I have met some students when I attended a block class and now I follow their progress via the magic of the workroom, TLC’s online student forum.” If you’d like to enquire about studying at The Learning Connexion School of Art and Creativity, call us on 0800 278 769, or email us at admissions@tlc.ac.nz.

Ensuring a safe workplace

L

earning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe workplace, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? Not all workplaces are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps is at some distance from a regular ambulance service. It is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities, both professional and social. Take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPR. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours’ duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field, either as a spectator or player, where a higher level of injury occurs. The eight-hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head, neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries, hypothermia and poisonings. Imagine the feeling of inadequacy when someone asks, “Does anyone know first aid?” only to find that you were not taught these skills on your course. The majority of injuries occur outside of the workplace, in fact one in three injuries occurs in

the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen. New Zealand children are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in Australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicle accidents or falls in the home. Fatalities from leisure and sport are not far behind those in the workplace. The wider 12-hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result in head, neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes such as motor vehicle accidents. In times of emergency, such as the Canterbury earthquakes, many people were called upon to do first aid in a situation well beyond their comfort zone. This is the community resilience that we, as good citizens, should be trained for. Lives were undoubtedly saved as ordinary people pushed themselves into a role that they never expected. It is not difficult and courses are not complicated. But one day, you will be called upon to help someone in need. Will you know what to do? If you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where it is located.

Leslie hails from Rotorua and began her journey with Te Wananga o Aoteroa after a recommendation from a work colleague. “Te Wananga o Aotearoa has helped me in my new role as a team leader in my company, overseeing staff and residents in our care.” Leslie believes the past two years of studying Te Reo Maori has helped her grow personally as well as professionally. “I now have the confidence to speak from my heart freely. Commitment to

research & development Innovating to produce cleaner, more efficient wood fires has been a successful strategy for New Zealand’s wood fire manufacturer, Metro Fires.

Keeping cool

in summer & warm in winter Are you struggling with the heat of summer or wanting to get organised for winter?

T

O

ngoing research and development coupled with innovative product design has produced a number of firsts for the Taranaki-owned and operated company. Wood fires that can heat large homes up to 280 square metres deliver hot water via a wetback and achieve emissions less than a third of the National Environmental Standard (NES), using renewable resources and at a lower cost per kilowatt than most alternatives. Metro’s commitment to research and development has seen the company invest in excess of $1 million in recent years in perfecting low emission clean air wood fires with emission ratings well below the NES standards of 1.5 grams. This ongoing investment into research and development is testament to Metro’s commitment to remain at the forefront of the wood fire industry. Mr Butler says, “Our product development and passion to create cleaner, greener New Zealand-made wood fires has provided our consumers with a range of low emission clean air approved wood fires with tested emission ratings all below 1 gram. We have clean air approved models in our range that burn so

clean they are under 0.5gms.” With a range of over 20 models and a further four new models for 2015 release, including wetback approved models, Metro fires are proudly 100 per cent New Zealand-made and the company is locally owned and operated. Using the highest quality materials, workmanship and the very latest manufacturing techniques, they are proud to support the local industry and keeping Kiwis warm with cost-effective solid fuel heating. “Now is the perfect time to consider your home heating requirements for the upcoming winter, and the performance and versatility of a wood fire is hard to beat. If you’re looking to build new or simply to upgrade your heating appliance, our nationwide retail network can advise on everything from appropriate heat output, wetbacks, installation, to things like hearth sizes, heating accessories and the model best suited for you.” For further information and product specifications, please contact South Island Hardware on 348 5843.

‘Jewels of Baroque Music Trio Sonatas presented by Tomas Hurnik’ is currently touring the South Island and plays the Knox Church, 28 Bealey Ave, Thursday 19th February at 7pm.

xperience an hour of beautiful intimate music from the 17th century for two violins, cello and a special Baroque instrument; the harpsichord. It is also an opportunity to listen to two internationally renowned musicians and specialists in baroque interpretation; Hungarian Baroque violinist Szabolcs Illes and Czech harpsichord player Edita Keglerova which will be joined by Baroque cellist Tomas Hurnik and Baroque violinist Philippa Lodge. “You will be surprised at how much beauty is hidden in music over 400 years old from famous Baroque composers Handel, Purcell, Corelli, Gemininani and also form unknown composers Marini, Uccellini, Matteis,Castrucci”. This is a rare chance to hear subtle beauty of period instruments in a vibrant atmosphere of churches which is the most suitable acoustic place for these instruments. Tickets sale at the door before the concert or on Eventfinder ($35 general $25 seniors and students).

ith such an extensive array of dishes already on offer at the Garden Buffet Restaurant in Marshland Rd, it's impressive to hear the restaurant is commemorating the Chinese New Year by adding even more dishes to the buffet selection.

The restaurant is currently celebrating the Chinese New Year with some authentic Chinese dishes added to the lunch and evening buffet. Following the lunar calendar, the Chinese New Year starts on Thursday 19th February with 2015 being the Year of the Sheep (also known as Goat and Ram). Every year Chinese from around the world everywhere celebrate the Chinese New Year. This is very similar to the Christmas celebration in the western cultures. Everyone travels home for this important family reunion event. During Chinese New Year gifts such as red packets (called 'Hong Bao') are normally given from the elders to the youngsters who have not yet married. The content is often money. This is similar to the presents exchanged at Christmas times.

“The celebration starts with a sumptuous meal on the Chinese New Year's Eve and festivities last for 15 days, ending with the Lantern Festival. A lot of dishes are served at this family dinner. Eating auspicious foods is a key part of the celebration. Most of the dishes have homonyms (words that sound like other words) with meanings along the lines of good luck, abundance and prosperity," explains Margaret Wong, Garden Hotel manager. "At the Garden Buffet we are celebrating the Chinese New Year by including some traditional Chinese dishes on our lunch and dinner buffet from Monday 16th February until Sunday 8th March."

Parking at Ferrymead Park is limited this year because of soccer ground upgrades for the FIFA U-20 World Cup. The main parking and bus departure point to both starts is now from McCormacks Bay Reserve.

Before the event starts

Buses to both start locations will be running from McCormacks Bay Reserve. Park your car in the designated car parking area at McCormacks Bay Fields and catch the special Red Bus to either start location. Buses will be departing between 7:30am and 8:30am for the City2Surf 14km 9am start at Centennial Park, and between 8:30am and 9:30am for the 10am Heart Foundation 6km start at Hansen Park. The 6km start drop off point is on Opawa Road (near Ford Street) where it’s an 800m walk to the Hansen Park start. Please note: McCormacks Bay Road is one way so you must enter from the western end (Mt Pleasant). Exit is at the eastern end (Redcliffs).

A free shuttle will operate between Ferrymead Park (finish) and McCormacks Bay (parking area). Alternatively, if you parked near your starting point, after completing the event catch the special Red Bus from Ferrymead Park back to your start location. Buses will be departing between 10am and 2pm, so if you have to leave early or wish to relax and enjoy the entertainment and prize giving there is a bus to suit you. We suggest that pick-ups are arranged from Ferry Road – do not attempt to enter Bridle Path Road or Ferrymead Park Drive as it will be too congested.
